State environmental review

State environmental review of proposed Chehalis River Basin Flood Damage Reduction Project

The Chehalis River Basin Flood Control Zone District (Flood District) is seeking to construct a unique flood-control dam and associated temporary reservoir on the Chehalis River near Pe Ell and make improvements to the levee around the Chehalis-Centralia Airport. The Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology) is reviewing the proposal under the State Environmental Policy Act.

On Nov. 20, 2025, Ecology released a revised state draft environmental impact statement for the project, analyzing whether the proposal would adversely impact the environment and ways these impacts might be offset or mitigated.

The public comment period for the revised draft environmental study is open until Feb. 4, 2026. Go to Ecology’s webpage for more information, including how to review and comment on the latest draft assessment.
